Homemade curd is better that market one, says dietician

600 kgs of adulterated fermented milk found in Gorakhpur, FSSAI warns consumers with two detection tips

Curd is a popular dietary choice during the summer season. People consume it in different ways. But, it is important to check whether the curd that we are consuming is pure or fake.

A shocking case from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh revealed the seizure of 600 kilos of adulterated curd, supplied to chaat and phulki vendors. Consuming such curd can harm the digestive system, cause food poisoning, and lead to serious illness. It's important to stay alert and ensure the curd we buy is safe.

How is adulteration done in curd?

Adulterators mix hydrogenated oil or cheap vegetable oil in curd to make it thick, white, and keep it fresh for a long time. These types of oils contain a high amount of trans fatty acids, which are extremely harmful to health.

In some cases, synthetic milk or already adulterated milk is used to set the curd. Such milk may contain chemicals like detergent, urea, starch, or shampoo, which maintain the texture of the curd but are not edible.

How dangerous is it to eat adulterated curd for health?

Dietitian Amrita Mishra explains that curd is a natural probiotic, which strengthens the digestive system and improves the immune system. However, when hydrogenated oil, synthetic milk, or chemicals are added to it, its effect becomes the opposite. This can cause problems related to the stomach and damage the liver and kidneys. It is especially dangerous for children, the elderly, and those who are already ill.

Precautions to take when buying curd

Check the cleanliness of the shop

The place where you are buying curd should be clean. Dirt can be a sign of contamination.

Make general inquiries

Ask the shopkeeper where the milk comes from and how the curd is set. If the answer is vague or evasive, be cautious.

Stored at a cold temperature

Curd should always be kept in ice or in the fridge. If the temperature is not maintained, it can get spoiled.

If needed, test at home

If in doubt, check for adulteration by rubbing with a finger or dissolving in warm water.

Precautions for Packed Curd

Check FSSAI number and seal

Look for the food safety (FSSAI)Adulteration number, brand seal, and proper condition of the packaging on packaged curd.

Check manufacturing and expiry date

Harmful bacteria can grow in expired curd, which can cause problems like food poisoning, vomiting, or diarrhea. Before eating, be sure to check the date, smell, and taste of the curd.

Homemade curd is better than market one

Dietician Amrita says that making curd at home is the best and safest way. Just make sure that the milk is of good quality and the starter (a small portion of curd) used to make the curd is clean. This way, you can prepare healthy curd for yourself and your family.

Apart from curd, which other dairy products are adulterated in the market?

Adulteration is also found in milk, paneer, ghee, butter, and cream. Therefore, exercise caution before purchasing.
